On Monday a case was filed in the Circuit Court of the 11th Judicial Circuit for Miami Dade County, Florida. The case was filed by a former employee against the Public Health Trust of Miami Dade County, doing business as Jackson Memorial Hospital. The case is regarding race and national origin discrimination in employment.
The plaintiff was employed by Jackson Memorial as a Senior Enrollment Specialist. During the course of his employment, the complaint said, the plaintiff was the subject of a number of race-based jokes and inappropriate language.
The plaintiff also reported denial of Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave and vacation time as retaliation for a previous Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint made by the plaintiff and other coworkers. Finally the plaintiff reported physical retaliation in the form of an unsafe workplace with vermin and bad wiring.
The plaintiff is suing for violations of the Florida civil rights act as to race and national origin. The plaintiff is represented by Remer & Georges-Pierre, PLLC.
