White House Details Trans Servicemember Ban

In the coming days, the White House will issue new guidelines to the Pentagon on how to implement a ban on transgender people in the military. The guidance will allow Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to decide whether or not to dismiss trans people who are already servicemembers. The White House will reportedly order the Pentagon to deny admittance to trans people and stop all spending on medical treatments related to transitioning. The ban should be fully implemented in six months, according to officials who spoke to the Wall Street Journal.

Under the new guidelines, Mattis will be required to consider an individual’s ability to be deployed for months at a time as a reason for discharge. “Transgender people are just as deployable as other service members,” said Sue Fulton, the former president of a military LGBTQ organization. Whether or not they are receiving medical treatment does not affect their ability to serve, and she compared it to cisgender servicemembers receiving other medical procedures when they are off base.
