Van Attack Kills 13, Injures 100 in Barcelona

Yesterday, a van drove into a crowd of people in Barcelona, killing 13 and injuring approximately 100. The attacker drove along the pedestrian section of Las Ramblas, a very popular street that intersects the city. Videos taken by witnesses spread on social media and showed chaos and injured people lying on the ground. Police chased the driver on foot, but he is still at large. Two other people were arrested in connection with the attack but it’s not clear what their roles were. ISIS later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Just hours later, a second van attack occurred in the town of Cambrils, 75 miles south of Barcelona. Seven people were wounded, and one woman later died from her injuries. Police shot and killed five perpetrators, and some turned out to be wearing fake explosive belts.

Now police are investigating whether the attack has anything to do with an explosion that took place in a house south of Barcelona Wednesday night, which killed one person. Officials believe that something went wrong when preparing the explosives, causing the attackers to be unable to set them off during the attacks. This was the deadliest terror attack in Spain in a decade.
