LAW STREET RELEASES FIRST-EVER TABULATION OF 58 KILLERS OF CRAIGSLIST
NEW YORK and WASHINGTON, October 29, 2014. Law Street Media (www.LawStreetMedia.com) today released the first-ever tabulation of the Killers of Craigslist. Law Street documented 45 murder victims who posted or responded to ads on Craigslist since 2009; 58 people are convicted or charged in those cases. To compile the data, Law Street’s Crime in America team spent four months analyzing police and court records and other public sources.

Since the arrest in 2009 of Philip Markoff, aka the “Craigslist Killer,” the website has faced increased scrutiny by the media. Law Street decided to take a closer look at the site and its media coverage to see how dangerous Craigslist really is. Was Markoff’s an isolated act, or an incident on a continuum?
The number of murder cases exceeds the victim count due to multiple charges in some cases. Of the 58 convicted or charged through last June, 22 cases are still pending. The oldest pending case dates to 2012, and eight are from 2014, indications that the killings continue. Craigslist did not reply to multiple inquiries.
